Lawas Perlu Sebuah Hospital Baru

Lawas Need a New Hospital
LAWAS- Lawas is a small town of northern Sarawak, eastern Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Lawas, by virtue of its geographical location, is cut off from the rest of Sarawak's road network. It is however linked by main road to Sabah and Brunei's Temburong district.  Travelling to or from Lawas by road requires undergoing immigration checks. Travelling to the rest of Sarawak requires a passport. Two road border crossings are located in Lawas district had to use a passport.

Residents in Lawas consist of Lunbawang tribes, Kedayans, Brunei Malay, Murut Tagal and Chinese. The main language spoken is Brunei Malay, Kedayans, Lunbawang and Hokkien.

We recently have made a visit at the Lawas District and the main issue has always been a question of the Lawas residents is old hospital.  A Lawas hospital condition is quite dilapidated and is only care by hospital assistants where there is no full-time doctor caring for patients there.

If there are cases of patients with critical or chronic conditions, the Lawas hospital had to send the patient out of district such as Miri hospital or Kota Kinabalu.

Due to travel arrangements which require passports then the people of Lawas difficult to bring the patient by land due to go through the Brunei border. If by air the fare is costly and difficult because the flights are limited.

The problem of passport rate fee is relatively expensive it should be reduced special to the people of Lawas of having to commute in and out through the Brunei border. Most of the people in Lawas is made up of fishermen, farmers and also work with the government with the moderate income, for those who have family outside the Lawas district certainly difficult to get out visiting family or even in the event of an emergency.

We were also told by one of the people in Lawas known as Haji Tuah, there is a new hospital in a rented shops building up till now could not fully operational. Although already 2 years the building was been rented by the hospital but it was not open to the public yet. It is a waste of public funds if the hospital which rent of the building is not fully utilized.

Among the Lawas residents demand is that the government was able to build a hospital complete with medical equipment and at the permanent site without having to rent a shop building.

Lawas hospitals need one or more medical specialists or full time doctors to take care of the people in Lawas. According to the people in Lawas, it just a call as hospital but no one is a full-time doctor in charge of the hospital.

They hope that when this issue is raised, the problem of hospital in Lawas can be resolved immediately without the need to wait for the election promises that often they had heard before.

They have been waiting for a dozens of years with hope in order to have a new hospital but so far have not materialized.

We urge the governments quickly build a new hospital in Lawas that is more sophisticated and able to handle the problems of which so many patients that had to be sent out of the Lawas district.

Hope this matter gets adequate attention from the relevant authorities and the cooperation with the government to solve the problem from prolonged is highly appreciated.
