Kata Douglas Ajon Bekas Perajurit

Former Ex Servicemen of Sarawak still Stay on State Land
Sealine village is nearby the Sanadin village within Lutong, Miri area and is occupied by a population of nearly 50 years. Before, it was the forest and it is close to Shell's oil fields. There are still many folks who have been living there yet to get land titles although it has been many times apply land for housing from the Land and Survey office.
We received a complaint from one of the veterans or ex serviceman who complains of their fate who had fought against the communists during the insurgency. Until now, many of them are still not getting a proper shelter after they fought tooth and nail against the communist. Some of them settled in Miri, For example Kg Sealine. They are from various armed forces: army, police and field force. Their sacrifices over the years seem not being recognized by the government. Although they have applied for residential land, but they demand getting less attention until they had to build a house on the state land. Before the Sarawak general election they were promised a grant of TOL or temporary occupation of land by former Piasau Assembly member who gave only a letter of land occupation until now the land grants for all Sealine folks are never heard off.

“Worst of all our kampong was surveyed very differently. Kampong Senadin was surveyed according to the existing boundary they had agreed before, the bigger or smaller the land lot occupied by the family that was deemed they should have but sea line was surveyed not this way. Actually our kampong was easier to survey than the kampong Senadin the houses were very well organized and lineup. What the surveyor did was following the draft map with allocated lot, too much hassle as we had to move our earlier agreed pegs to a new location points. A family with small land was given a big lot and those who had big land sometimes shared the same lot.
The lot or a piece of land we occupied was paid for the maintenance to the original owners, the land are not free for us who settled here. Why the surveyor can’t used their initiative as to how we felt rather than doing the job just for the sake of coming election at that time. if we complained they said we followed the map. Now the Sealine folks sacred to come to land and survey office as they fear of not being entertained and where are the word of “may I help you” and serve with smile.” said one of the resident.

Here we questioned why the government not take much attention to the plight of veterans, or people who are less fortunate. Although we hear the multi-billion allocation budget for the welfare of the people but why is there left behind? We demanded that the relevant party responsible for the welfare of the people take it seriously to the fate of this people. The government's responsibility is to help and provide peace for all people regardless of race, religion and political belief.

"I was one of the veterans who occupied the land at mile 6 ½ miri-Bintulu road, which was occupied by the greedy shin yang. We spent between 5-6K for each family for the drainage and planting. PBTM HAD applied several times through the Land and survey Miri and even forwards the application to Kuching. If the reason is that it is a catchment area why asked the palm company to plant oil palms which require tons of fertilizers and insecticides".Said Douglas Ajon Ex Serviceman
