Perundangan Syariah Adil Untuk Semua
Sharia Law Justice for All
Recently, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, announced Sharia law to be implemented as part of Islamic stringent criminal law, making Brunei the first country in Southeast Asia to enforce Sharia law on the national level, the Associated Press reported. Hassanal Bolkiah said the law should be regarded as a form of "special guidance" from God, and that it would be "part of the great history of the" Brunei, a small nation on the island of Borneo.
This law will be enforced in six months, and it includes penalties such as amputation for theft and stoning for adultery, Bolkiah said. The Sharia Penal Code to be used only by Muslims.
The Hon Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, State Mufti of Brunei Darussalam, the leading Islamic scholars in the country, told a conference Tuesday that Sharia law "secures justice for all persons and the protection of their welfare."
This proves that Sharia legislative can be implemented if the rulers of the country itself confident of Sharia legislative justice. For non-Muslims, the issue is not to scare them due it does not affect them because they are subject under the general law (common law). This is the cause the people to be afraid because they are not getting the actual explanations from the experts in Sharia legislative. When the public is lack of knowledge talk about Sharia legislative then there are all sorts of things that are not true about Sharia legislative justice.
If Brunei successfully implements this Sharia law very well and fairly, we are confident this will be a model for our country to implement it in phases. For example, the majority of the State religion of Islam such as Kelantan and Terengganu can implement Sharia legislative for Muslims regardless of political affiliation. The best way to give an understanding of Sharia legislative is to have an open dialogue between religions and also be published in the mass media as performed by the government of Brunei.
